
What is a Wi-Fi Network
Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, is a technology that enables devices such as laptops, smartphones, and printers to connect to the internet and communicate with each other without the need for cables. It creates a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), allowing multiple devices to share data and network resources seamlessly.
Most Wi-Fi network relies on an access point, either built into a router or set up as a standalone device, to broadcast the wireless signal. Because it’s so simple to use, Wi-Fi has become an essential part of everyday life, powering connections in offices, airports, hotels, schools, cafés, and public spaces around the world. However, this convenience can also introduce risks. Public Wi-Fi networks without strong security measures can expose users to threats such as data theft, malware attacks, or unauthorized access to personal and corporate information. How Does Wi-Fi Work?
Wi-Fi network works by transmitting information over radio frequencies. The most common frequency bands are 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. Lower frequencies, such as 2.4 GHz, provide broader coverage but slower speeds, while higher frequencies, like 6 GHz, offer faster performance over shorter distances.
Wi-Fi operates according to the IEEE 802.11 standards, which define how wireless networks function. Over the years, versions such as 802.11n (Wi-Fi 4), 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), and 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) have contributed to the evolution of Wi-Fi into the fast and reliable technology widely used today.
When a device connects to a Wi-Fi network, it communicates with the access point to exchange network information, including the network name (SSID) and security type. After entering the correct password, the access point authenticates the device and assigns it an IP address, enabling full network access for activities such as browsing, streaming, and file sharing.
Where Did It All Begin?
Wi-Fi traces its origins back to 1991, when NCR Corporation and AT&T developed a way to connect cash registers wirelessly using a technology called WaveLAN. This breakthrough eventually led the IEEE to establish the 802.11 standard, providing a foundation for wireless networking. By 1999, the Wi-Fi Alliance was formed to manage certification and ensure the technology remained consistent worldwide. What began as a solution for retail has since evolved into a critical backbone of global connectivity.
